Longer, Happier Lives

Prevention is the keystone of health.

We strive to prevent illness whenever possible. The time and effort invested in Wellness programs has rewards for both pets and owners.

Physical Exam

A vet and a veterinary technician examine the hind leg of a brown dog in a clinic, with an educational poster about dog health in the background.
Our Wellness programs are designed specifically for your pet and include: Comprehensive physical exam; internal parasite testing; heartworm and flea control; vaccination program; spay and neuter package and specialized blood tests for all life stages. We perform risk assessments for each pet to help you decide which protocols your pet needs for optimum protection against disease and illness. There is no such thing as “one-size-fits-all medicine.”
This is a non-invasive, routine evaluation performed twice a year for well pets, and also during any sick visit, by the veterinarian. There are twelve main body systems that are evaluated during a physical exam. Deviances from normal may be subtle, but if detected early, can lead to resolution of the problem or better long-term management, and therefore a healthier, happier pet.
Despite an in-depth physical exam, there are still things a veterinarian cannot tell you about your animal after the “external” evaluation. We consider bloodwork and a urinalysis to be the “internal” physical exam of your animal, evaluating organ systems such as the kidneys, liver, pancreas, thyroid gland, electrolyte balance, blood sugar, blood proteins, red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and urinary bladder, to name a few. Many diseases will show up in the bloodwork BEFORE the animal shows outward signs of disease. Pets aged zero to six years have bloodwork evaluated annually, while pets seven years and older are evaluated twice each year.

Vaccines

Vaccines are medical procedures designed to prevent your pet from severe infectious diseases. We do not believe in vaccinating every animal with every vaccine on the market. Since individual pets live different lives, different pets are at risk for different things. It is for this reason, we assess your pet’s lifestyle to develop a tailored vaccination program. We also spread out vaccinations over the twice a year visits to prevent vaccine reactions as much as possible.
Core Vaccines
  • 1-year or 3-year Rabies (required by law for all cats and dogs)
  • 1-year or 3-year DAP (Distemper/Adenovirus/Parvovirus) for dogs
  • 1-year or 3-year FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis/Chlamydia/ Calicivirus/ Panleukopenia) – cats
Risk Dependent Vaccines
  • Lyme Disease
  • Leptosporosis
  • Canine Influenza – H3N8/H3N2
  • Bordetella bronchiseptica (Kennel Cough)
  • Crotalus Atrox Toxoid (Rattlesnake Vaccine)
  • Feline Leukemia (1 year/2 year)

How are food ingredients utilized by the body?

Carbohydrates and lipids (fats) power the metabolism.
This is achieved with specific nutrients incorporated into food rations such as antioxidants and nutraceuticals. Nutrients can contribute to the prevention of renal infections or digestive disorders, for example, and have an anti-aging effect.

Microchipping

A vet scanning a microchip on a scruffy, dark-haired dog held closely by a woman wearing a medical uniform and a stethoscope.
Microchipping your pet gives your pet permanent identification and the best chance for finding his/her way home in the event of natural disasters, emergencies, is stolen or is lost from home. The microchip is inserted with a simple injection while your pet is awake. If your pet becomes lost and someone takes him to a shelter or a veterinarian, the staff will scan the microchip to read its unique number. Then, your contact information can be obtained through the microchip registry, and you will be contacted for a reunion with your pet.
Since we live in a hurricane prone area, microchipping your pet is a smart decision. Without ID, 90% of pets never return home. Please help provide a happy homecoming for you and your pet!

Urgent & Emergency Care

A vet points to an x-ray image on a computer screen, explaining it to an attentive colleague in a clinic room filled with medical equipment.
Sometimes pets need care on an urgent or even emergency basis. It is our goal to offer same day appointments for these pets during regular business hours.
We offer expert supportive care with the ability to run blood tests on the spot, take radiographs on site, and hospitalization with IV catheterization, heart monitoring, pain management and much more.
Our experienced veterinary staff is trained and prepared to immediately administer the ABC’s of basic life support:
A. Airway
B. Breathing
C. Circulation/Cardiac compressions
Even when we are closed, we partner with GuardianVets, a service that allows you to call our office and be connected to one of their Licensed Veterinary Technicians who can give you some basic guidance to help point you in the right direction. This is a free service.
In addition, we refer to the services of the local veterinary emergency centers located in Mt. Pleasant, Summerville and West Ashley. These centers are best for the most critical patients as well as times that we are closed.
Additionally there is PawMed, a veterinary urgent care facility in West Ashley that has extended hours, including weekends.
Remember, pets in pain may not realize you are trying to help them and therefore may try to bite you. Keep away from the head area or wrap the neck/head in a towel, preserving the airway, to protect you both. Try to contact us before your arrival and be prepared to answer a few brief questions to better us in assisting you when you arrive.
An after-hours veterinary triage service, completely free to our clients. Just give us a call at 843-884-4494 and a licensed veterinary professional will be happy to help you with your questions and concerns.

The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) is your best resource for any animal poison-related emergency, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you think your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, call (888) 426-4435.
